Gad Saad’s “suicidal empathy” is exploding in relevance: unchecked compassion for outsiders, often weaponized, while ignoring threats to your own society leads to self-destruction. Open borders, soft crime policies, and cultural erosion prove it. Empathy is good; civilizational suicide isn’t. Wake up before it’s too late. #SuicidalEmpathy
From Virtue to Suicide: What Gad Saad Means by “Suicidal Empathy”
Suicidal empathy is empathy that’s unbounded, unreciprocated, and turned against the people and systems that make empathy possible.
In The Parasitic Mind, Saad describes “idea pathogens” like radical relativism, infinite tolerance, and guilt-based politics that hijack empathy and disconnect it from reality and self-preservation. These mental viruses make you feel virtuous for prioritizing strangers over your own family, community, or civilization.
This is not an attack on empathy itself. Empathy is an evolved virtue that binds tribes, raises children, and builds trust. The problem is empathy that refuses hierarchy of values: protecting your family, city, or civilization comes before pleasing Twitter mobs or virtue-signaling influencers.
When compassion becomes the highest good, trumping truth, boundaries, and survival, it stops being compassion. It becomes suicide.
How Suicidal Empathy Shows Up in Immigration and Crime
Immigration: High-empathy rhetoric pushes open borders without serious screening, integration planning, or honest discussion of value clashes, then brands any concern “hate.” The result? Parallel societies that don’t assimilate, skyrocketing welfare costs, and eroded national identity. Europe’s watching this play out in real time: no-go zones, grooming gangs, and politicians who prioritize migrants over citizens.
Crime: Repeat offenders released in the name of understanding their “background,” while victims pay the price. San Francisco shoplifters walk free because “compassion.” London knife crime surges while police chase “hate speech.” Empathy for criminals overrides justice for the law-abiding.
Cultural erosion: Karl Popper’s paradox of tolerance, tolerating the intolerant leads to the death of tolerance itself. Empathy for illiberal ideologies dissolves hard-won rights: women’s rights, free speech, secular law. Dubai founders, UAE leaders, parents watching Europe/North America: this is your cautionary tale. What protects you today can vanish tomorrow when compassion overrides discernment.
The Psychology: Why Empathy Becomes Dangerous
Cognitive empathy (understanding others’ minds) is morally neutral, used for good or manipulation.
Emotional empathy (feeling others’ pain) without boundaries leads to empathic distress and bad policy. Research shows high trait empathy drives generous attitudes toward refugees, but doesn’t guarantee functional integration or safety.
“Suicidal empathy” is moral vanity: addiction to feeling like “the good ones,” even when choices make everything worse long-term.
This is your inner algorithm glitching: empathy parameter set to 100, boundaries/truth/responsibility set to 0. System crash inevitable. Your nervous system can’t sustain infinite compassion for everyone while neglecting your own survival.
Coaching, Therapy, and the Empathy Trap
Healthy empathy in coaching:
- Listen without judgment
- Mirror the client’s experience
- Build safe container for brutal honesty and change
Suicidal empathy in coaching:
- Over-validate victimhood narratives
- Avoid confrontation because “they’ve already suffered enough”
- Protect client from discomfort instead of guiding through it
For burned-out high performers, suicidal empathy sounds like: “Of course you’re exhausted; it’s not your fault, your company is toxic” (never touching their over-pleasing or lack of boundaries).
For people stuck in relationships: “I get how much they hurt you” (never calling out how client keeps reenacting the same choice).
My R.I.S.E.™ isn’t “coddle and soothe.” It’s recognise, interrupt, re-code the inner algorithm. Empathy opens the door. Accountability locks in transformation.
When Your Empathy is Killing You (and Your Kids)
Parents empathize so much with child’s feelings they never say “no,” never enforce sleep/diet/discipline, shocked by resulting anxiety, entitlement, fragility.
Partners understand spouse’s trauma so much they tolerate ongoing abuse/addiction.
Leaders “care” about employees to point of never firing saboteurs/underperformers, slowly poisoning the team.
Truth: Empathy without standards breeds monsters, on streets, in homes, boardrooms. Compassion that excuses destruction isn’t love. It’s sabotage. Read that again…
A New Model: Calibrated Empathy
Calibrated empathy (“weaponised compassion with guardrails”):
Empathy + truth: “I feel you” plus “Here’s what you’re destroying.”
Empathy + hierarchy: “We care about outsiders” but “We protect children/communities/values first.”
Empathy + consequences: “I understand why” plus “Here’s what changes now.”
As coach:
- Love client, refuse excuses!
- Understand wound, demand pattern stops!
- Feel pain, say “This part is on you”!
As citizen:
- Feel for genuine refugees, demand vetting/assimilation/red lines
- Oppose cruelty, demand tough crime responses
- Honour diversity, insist culture doesn’t kneel to ideologies banning your freedom
Empathy as a Tool, Not a God
Empathy is a tool, not deity. Worship it as highest good, sacrifice reality/justice/survival on its altar.
Civilisations that survive treat empathy like fire: essential in hearth, catastrophic burning house down.
Coaching that transforms treats empathy as doorway, not destination.
In my coaching: I feel with you. I see you. Then hold you ruthlessly accountable to life you say you want, not story you keep replaying.
Empathy starts. Responsibility finishes.
Leaders who’ve outgrown therapy/motivational endless talks: uncalibrated empathy keeps you stuck. Calibrated empathy transforms. Apply for R.I.S.E.™
